Falling for Arizona: The Storm That Opened the Door to Fall

After an unforgettable downpour, cooler evenings, fall-break adventures, and Arizona’s most beautiful season are finally arriving.

If Arizona wanted to announce the beginning of fall, it certainly found a dramatic way to do it.

One minute, we were looking at another warm September afternoon. The next, the skies opened, streets turned into rivers, washes started flowing, and parts of Scottsdale and the North Valley received inches of rain.

It honestly felt as though we received more rain in one afternoon than we had seen all year.

And after such an unusually dry season, it was awesome to finally watch the desert come alive. The air smelled different. The temperature dropped. The mountains disappeared behind curtains of rain. For a few hours, Arizona reminded everyone that our weather can be just as spectacular as our sunsets.

Of course, Arizona storms can also become dangerous very quickly. Never drive through a flooded roadway, stay away from flowing washes, and remember our unofficial monsoon rule: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

But once the clouds cleared and the water began to recede, it felt like the storm had washed away the last chapter of summer.

Welcome to fall in Arizona.

Yes, It Is Still Warm—But Something Has Changed

Let’s be honest: Arizona does not always receive the autumn memo at the same time as the rest of the country.

While people in other states are already pulling out heavy coats, many of us are still wearing shorts and ordering iced drinks. But longtime Arizona residents can feel the difference.

The days of 110-degree temperatures are fading behind us. Most afternoons are settling into the upper 90s, and once the sun begins dropping after 5:00 p.m., temperatures can fall into the 80s and low 90s.

After a long Arizona summer, that feels absolutely beautiful.

This is when patios begin filling again. Evening walks return. Restaurants reopen their outdoor seating. Golf courses become busier. Kids head back to neighborhood parks, and homeowners finally remember why they invested in that great backyard.

Our version of fall may not begin with frost on the windows. It begins when you step outside after dinner and think, “Wow, this actually feels nice.”

That is when you know Arizona’s best season is getting started.

Fall Break Means It Is Time to Head North

We are also approaching fall break for many Arizona schools, making this the perfect time for a quick road trip.

One of the greatest things about living in Arizona is how quickly you can change seasons simply by changing elevation. You can leave the Valley in warm weather and, within a couple of hours, find crisp mountain air, pine forests and changing leaves.

Flagstaff is one of Arizona’s best-known fall destinations, especially around the San Francisco Peaks and Arizona Snowbowl. The aspens create brilliant splashes of yellow and gold against the evergreens, giving families plenty of opportunities for scenic drives, hiking and incredible photographs.

Prescott offers historic charm, cooler temperatures, hiking around Watson Lake and the perfect weather for walking around Courthouse Plaza. Sedona combines changing cottonwoods with its famous red-rock scenery, while Payson, Pine, Strawberry, Happy Jack and the Mogollon Rim offer quieter escapes surrounded by forest.

Just remember one important rule: bring a sweater.

It may be warm when you leave Phoenix or Scottsdale, but Northern Arizona evenings can become surprisingly chilly. That temperature change is part of the fun—and part of what makes living here so unique.

Four States, Four Different Fall Adventures

If you have a little more time, Arizona also places you within reach of the entire Four Corners region.

Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico meet at the only location in the United States where four states touch. By fall, each offers its own version of the season.

Utah delivers dramatic red-rock landscapes without the peak summer heat. Colorado offers mountain towns, golden aspens and crisp alpine mornings. New Mexico combines fall colors with historic communities, art, culture and unforgettable Southwestern food.

And right here in Arizona, you can begin the day among palm trees and desert saguaros, then end it beneath towering ponderosa pines.

Few places give you that much variety without requiring a flight.

Arizona’s Outdoor Season Is Just Beginning

In many parts of the country, fall signals the gradual end of outdoor living. In Arizona, it means outdoor living is finally returning.

Over the coming weeks, farmers markets, community festivals, outdoor concerts, car shows and pumpkin patches will begin filling the calendar. Hiking trails will become more inviting, golf season will pick up, and backyard entertaining will return.

Soon, we will be enjoying dinner outside, opening our windows in the morning and watching our seasonal residents return for another Arizona winter.

This is also when people visiting from other states begin to understand the Arizona lifestyle. They arrive expecting endless desert heat and discover mountain escapes, changing leaves, cool evenings, vibrant communities and months of beautiful outdoor weather.

It is one reason so many visitors eventually decide they want to call Arizona home.

This Is Why We Fall for Arizona

Arizona does not experience fall in just one way.

It may be a sudden September storm rolling across the Valley. It may be an evening patio finally cool enough for dinner. It may be a family drive to Flagstaff, a weekend in Prescott or Sedona, or that first morning when opening the back door feels better than turning down the air conditioning.

Our seasons do not always follow the traditional calendar, but they arrive with plenty of personality.

The rain gave us a spectacular beginning. The temperatures are coming down. Fall break is almost here. Northern Arizona is preparing to change colors, and the best months for enjoying the Valley are directly ahead.

Summer had its moment.
