☀️ Arizona Summers Are Misunderstood: The Ultimate Guide to Living, Exploring & Thriving During an Arizona Summer
If you've been following The Grandon Group this summer, you've probably noticed we've spent a lot of time talking about one simple idea:
Arizona summers are misunderstood.
Yes, Arizona gets hot.
Really hot.
We're not going to pretend that 110 degrees is sweater weather. But if all you know about an Arizona summer is the number you see on the weather app, you're missing a huge part of what it's actually like to live in Arizona.
There's a major difference between visiting Arizona in July and actually knowing how to live here year-round.
Those of us who call the Phoenix and Scottsdale area home learn something pretty quickly: you don't stop living during the summer—you simply live differently.
You get outside earlier. You spend afternoons around the pool. You discover restaurants, resorts and indoor activities you might ignore during our picture-perfect winter months. You head north for a weekend. You watch incredible monsoon sunsets. You appreciate uncrowded restaurants and quieter resorts.
And before you know it, Labor Day arrives and you can almost feel Arizona beginning to change.
That's where we are now.
As we head toward the final days of August and the unofficial end of summer, I wanted to look back at what we've talked about all season—and explain why I still believe Arizona summers are one of the most misunderstood parts of living in Arizona.
🌵 Visiting Arizona Is Different Than Living in Arizona
Whenever someone tells me, "I could never live in Arizona because it's too hot," I understand where they're coming from.
If you've only experienced Phoenix or Scottsdale by walking out of Sky Harbor Airport at 2:00 in the afternoon in July, you're probably wondering why anyone voluntarily lives here.
But that's not how locals experience an entire summer.
We adjust.
Instead of hiking at noon, you get up early and watch the desert come alive at sunrise.
Instead of sitting outside during the hottest part of the afternoon, that's when you hit the pool, go to lunch, catch a movie, shop, work out or enjoy everything else we have indoors.
And when the sun starts dropping?
Arizona evenings can be spectacular.
Then there are the weekend escapes.
One of the greatest advantages of living in the Phoenix metropolitan area is that you can leave the desert and completely change your surroundings without leaving the state.
🚗 Head north to Flagstaff and you're surrounded by pine trees.
🌲 Spend a weekend in Prescott and enjoy a completely different small-town Arizona atmosphere.
🏜️ Drive to Sedona and you're surrounded by some of the most recognizable scenery in America.
⛰️ Head toward the White Mountains and suddenly that Phoenix heat feels a world away.
That's something people considering moving to Arizona don't always understand.
Arizona isn't one climate.
It's an incredibly diverse state, and living in the Valley gives you access to all of it.
🌊 What Living in Newport Beach Taught Me About Seasons
Years ago, I had the opportunity to live right on the sand in Newport Beach, California.
And yes, I was incredibly fortunate.
But living there taught me something about seasons that I've never forgotten.
Memorial Day weekend would arrive and suddenly the place exploded.
The beach was packed.
Cars were everywhere.
Every available parking spot disappeared.
People would literally offer money just to park near the beach.
One guy offered me $150 to park in my garage.
And yes...
I took the $150. 😂
But the really fascinating part wasn't Memorial Day.
It was Labor Day.
The entire Labor Day weekend could be absolutely packed.
Then Monday afternoon would arrive.
Three o'clock.
Four o'clock.
The sun would start dropping.
And suddenly...
Everybody disappeared.
It was unbelievable.
You could practically look down the beach and see nobody.
The ocean hadn't changed.
The sand hadn't changed.
Southern California hadn't suddenly become less beautiful.
The calendar changed.
Summer was "over."
That experience always stuck with me because every part of the country seems to have its own seasonal rhythm.
And Arizona absolutely has one too.
🇺🇸 Why Labor Day Feels Different in Arizona
Technically, Labor Day isn't the first day of fall.
We know that.
But culturally, Labor Day weekend has always felt like America's unofficial end of summer.
School is back.
Summer vacations are winding down.
Football is starting.
Halloween decorations mysteriously begin appearing in stores ridiculously early.
And here in Arizona, something else begins happening.
We start watching those nighttime temperatures.
We may still have triple-digit afternoons ahead of us. That's Arizona.
But eventually you notice something.
The mornings feel a little different.
The sun sets a little earlier.
The evenings become more comfortable.
And eventually somebody says the words every Arizona resident has been waiting months to hear:
"We should sit outside."

That's when you know it's coming.
🌴 Phoenix and Scottsdale Don't Shut Down During Summer
There's another misconception about Phoenix and Scottsdale summers that I think needs to change.
Summer shouldn't be viewed as the season when Arizona shuts down.
It's simply a different season.
In fact, summer can be one of the best times for Arizona residents to enjoy their own city.
Restaurants can be easier to get into.
Resorts offer staycation opportunities.
Pools become part of everyday life.
Entertainment moves indoors.
Businesses run summer specials.
And places that are packed during our winter tourism season suddenly become much easier for locals to enjoy.
We've talked about this throughout our Arizona Summers Are Misunderstood series because I think Arizona residents should take advantage of summer instead of constantly apologizing for it.
Yes, it's hot.
So what are we going to do with it?
That's the better question.
🏊 The Arizona Summer Lifestyle Is Different—and That's Okay
Think about other parts of the country.
When it's freezing outside and there's three feet of snow on the ground, people adapt.
When it's raining for days somewhere else, people adapt.
When it's humid enough that walking outside feels like stepping into a wet towel, people adapt.
Arizona is no different.
Our challenging season happens to be summer.
So we adapt.
Pools become gathering places.
Early mornings become incredibly valuable.
Weekend trips become part of the lifestyle.
Our restaurants, entertainment venues and resorts give us places to escape the afternoon heat.
And then there are those evenings when a summer storm starts building over the mountains.
⛈️ Don't Forget About Arizona Monsoon Season
One of my favorite things about an Arizona summer is something people outside the Southwest often don't understand:
Monsoon season.
Watching those clouds build across the desert can be incredible.
The sky changes.
The temperature can suddenly drop.
You smell rain in the desert.
Lightning appears across the mountains.
And Arizona puts on one of the greatest natural shows you'll ever see.
Obviously, monsoon storms need to be taken seriously. Flash flooding, lightning, blowing dust and strong winds can be dangerous.
But there's also something uniquely Arizona about sitting somewhere safe and watching a storm roll across the desert after a brutally hot afternoon.
You don't get that everywhere.
And once you've experienced enough Arizona summers, you start looking forward to it.
🚗 One of Arizona's Greatest Advantages: You Can Escape the Heat
This may be the single biggest misconception I wish people moving here understood.
You don't have to spend every summer weekend in Phoenix.
One of the reasons I love Arizona is the ability to completely change environments in a relatively short drive.
That's part of the Arizona lifestyle.
You can wake up in the desert and later that day be standing among pine trees.
You can spend a weekend in Flagstaff.
Visit Prescott.
Explore Sedona.
Head toward Payson.
Find a lake.
Rent a cabin.
Take the kids somewhere completely different.
And then come home.
People sometimes compare Arizona's summer negatively with California because California has the beach.
That's fair.
California has some spectacular places.
I've lived there.
But Arizona has something special too:
Variety.
Desert.
Mountains.
Pines.
Lakes.
Red rocks.
Small towns.
Big cities.
And some of those experiences are only a few hours apart.
🏡 What Arizona Summers Mean for Real Estate
As Realtors, summer also gives us an interesting look at the Arizona real estate market.
People don't stop moving because it's hot.
Jobs change.
Families grow.
People retire.
Kids change schools.
People relocate to Arizona.
Homes still sell.
Buyers still buy.
Sellers still sell.
But summer buyers can be especially interesting because they're often serious.
Nobody wakes up on a 112-degree Saturday and says:
"You know what sounds fun? Let's randomly tour 12 houses."

If they're out looking, there's usually a reason.
That's also why understanding the Arizona lifestyle matters so much in real estate.
We've always believed we aren't simply selling houses.
We're selling Arizona.
We're selling the neighborhood.
We're selling the morning hike.
We're selling the restaurants down the street.
We're selling the backyard pool.
We're selling the ability to drive north and see snow in the winter.
We're selling the golf course, the hiking trail, the community, the sunsets and the lifestyle surrounding the house.
Because people rarely move to Arizona simply because they found four walls and a roof they liked.
They move here because they can picture their life here.
❤️ Why We Love Living in Arizona
I'm an Arizona native, so obviously I'm biased.
But I've also traveled enough and lived other places long enough to appreciate what we have.
Arizona isn't perfect.
No place is.
But when you look at the entire year instead of judging Arizona by one afternoon in July, the picture changes dramatically.
Think about what comes after summer.
Fall.
Halloween.
Thanksgiving.
Christmas.
Winter.
Spring Training.
Golf season.
Patio season.
Hiking season.
Car shows.
Outdoor festivals.
Community events.
And months of weather that cause millions of people from around the country to come visit the exact place we get to call home.
That's a pretty good trade.
🎃 And Now My Favorite Time of Year Begins...
Anyone who knows me knows I'm a bit of a holiday nerd.
Actually, "a bit" might be understating it.
Around here, I pretty much consider myself the Mayor of Halloween. 🎃
And Christmas?
Don't even get me started. 🎄😂
So when Labor Day arrives, something switches in my brain.
It's time.
Fall is coming.
Halloween is coming.
Thanksgiving is coming.
Christmas is coming.
The weather is going to start changing.
Neighborhoods start decorating.
Outdoor events return.
People start gathering outside again.
And Arizona enters what I think is one of the greatest stretches of weather and lifestyle anywhere in the country.
So get ready.
