🏨 Airbnb vs. Hotels: The Ultimate Travel Showdown (From Rome, Italy 🇮🇹)

If you've spent any time in Arizona, you've probably heard the ongoing debate: Airbnb or Hotels?

As a Realtor with The Grandon Group, I've seen this discussion come up for years. Some people absolutely love Airbnb rentals and believe they're the future of travel. Others are loyal hotel guests and wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else.

Well, life recently gave me the perfect opportunity to test both sides of the argument.

As I write this, my family and I are traveling through Rome, Italy 🇮🇹. There are 13 of us, and we're staying in a beautiful Airbnb. Honestly, it's been incredible.

But it's also reminded me why hotels continue to thrive and why many travelers still prefer them.

So let's settle the debate—or at least have some fun trying.

🏡 Why Airbnb Can Be Amazing

For large groups, families, and extended vacations, Airbnb can feel like you've discovered a travel hack.

✅ Airbnb Pros

  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Perfect for Large Groups – Keeping 13 people together under one roof is much easier than booking multiple hotel rooms.
  • 📏 More Space – Living rooms, dining areas, multiple bedrooms, and outdoor spaces create a much more comfortable experience.
  • 🍳 Full Kitchen Access – Make breakfast, store snacks, prepare meals, and save money on dining out.
  • Morning Coffee at Home – No waiting in long coffee shop lines before starting your day.
  • 🧺 Washer & Dryer – A huge benefit during longer trips, especially when traveling internationally.
  • 🏠 Feels Like Living Like a Local – Experience neighborhoods and daily life beyond the tourist areas.
  • 💰 Can Be More Affordable for Groups – Splitting one property among several travelers often lowers costs.
  • 🎉 Built-In Gathering Space – Everyone can hang out together instead of being separated into different rooms.
  • 🌍 Unique Properties – Historic apartments, villas, cabins, desert retreats, and homes with character.
  • 🔒 More Privacy – No crowded elevators, busy lobbies, or hallways full of strangers.

❌ Airbnb Cons

  • 🧹 No Daily Housekeeping – If you make the bed, congratulations... you're the housekeeping staff.
  • 🛁 Limited Towels – Need fresh towels? You may be doing laundry.
  • 🧻 Supply Shortages – Running out of toilet paper isn't exactly a vacation highlight.
  • 🗑️ You Handle the Trash – Vacation chores are still chores.
  • 🍽️ Dishes Don't Wash Themselves – Someone eventually becomes the designated dishwasher.
  • 📱 No Front Desk – If something goes wrong, you're texting the host and hoping for a quick response.
  • 🔧 Maintenance Can Be Slower – Repairs aren't always immediate.
  • 🚪 Check-In Can Be Complicated – Keypads, lockboxes, codes, and detailed instructions.
  • 📸 Photos Can Be Misleading – Sometimes reality doesn't quite match the listing.
  • 🧼 Checkout Chores – Take out trash, start laundry, wash dishes, and still pay a cleaning fee.

🏨 Why Hotels Still Have a Major Advantage

The longer our trip continues, the more I appreciate certain hotel luxuries that are easy to take for granted.

✅ Hotel Pros

  • 🛏️ Daily Room Cleaning – Leave your room messy and return to perfection.
  • 🧺 Fresh Towels Anytime – One phone call and they're delivered.
  • 🍔 Room Service – Sometimes convenience wins.
  • 👨‍💼 Front Desk Support – Need help? Someone is available 24/7.
  • 📍 Concierge Services – Restaurant reservations, transportation, directions, and local recommendations.
  • 🏊 Amenities – Pools, spas, fitness centers, bars, restaurants, and lounges.
  • 🔒 Security – Many travelers feel more comfortable with staffed facilities.
  • Quick Maintenance – Problems often get resolved immediately.
  • 🎯 Consistency – You generally know exactly what you're getting.
  • 😌 True Relaxation – No dishes. No laundry. No cleaning. Just vacation.

❌ Hotel Cons

  • 📏 Smaller Rooms – Space can feel tight for families.
  • 💸 Can Be Expensive for Groups – Multiple rooms add up quickly.
  • 🚪 Limited Gathering Space – Harder to get everyone together.
  • 🍴 No Full Kitchen – Dining out for every meal gets expensive.
  • 🚗 Parking Fees – Hotels seem to have mastered the art of extra charges.
  • 🏢 Less Character – Many hotel rooms look nearly identical.
  • 👥 Less Privacy – You're sharing the building with hundreds of guests.
  • 📢 Noise – Hallway conversations always seem louder at midnight.
  • 💳 Extra Fees – Resort fees, parking fees, and service charges can add up.
  • 🌎 Less Local Experience – You may feel more like a tourist than a resident.

🏆 The Winner: Hotels (By a Narrow Margin)

Now before Airbnb fans start sending angry emails, hear me out.

I absolutely love our Airbnb in Rome. For a group of 13 people, it's been the perfect choice. We have room to spread out, spend time together, and enjoy a unique travel experience.

But if we're talking about the average traveler, the average vacation, and the overall experience...

🥇 Hotels get the win.

Why?

Because convenience matters.

There is something magical about leaving your room in the morning and returning to:

  • ✨ Freshly made beds
  • ✨ Clean bathrooms
  • ✨ New towels
  • ✨ Empty trash cans
  • ✨ A room that somehow looks better than when you left it

When you're spending hard-earned money on vacation, one of the greatest luxuries isn't extra square footage.

It's not having to do chores.

For family reunions, large groups, and extended stays, Airbnb can be an outstanding option.

For couples, business travelers, and anyone who truly wants to unplug and relax, hotels still wear the crown. 👑

🤔 What's Your Vote?

Are you Team Airbnb 🏡 or Team Hotel 🏨?

The debate has been raging for years in Arizona and across the country, and after traveling halfway around the world, I'm convinced there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer.
