Before You Hit the Road: Vacation Time

Before You Hit the Road: Vacation Time

As we roll into the middle of June, it’s a time for sun, fun, barbecues, Father’s Day celebrations, and yes — family vacations! Whether you’re heading to the beach, escaping to the mountains, or simply taking a quick staycation, it’s important to make sure your home is ready for your absence. A little preparation can save you a lot of stress while you’re away and help you come back to a safe, clean, and problem-free house.

Here’s a helpful checklist to prep your home before your vacation:

✅ 1. Check for Water LeaksThe last thing you want is to come home to water damage. Take a quick look under sinks, around the washing machine, and near water heaters. If possible, shut off the water supply to toilets and sinks before leaving.

✅ 2. Arrange Pet Care

If you have furry (or scaly!) family members, make sure you have a reliable friend, family member, or pet-sitter lined up. They should stop by at least twice a day to feed, walk, and check on your pets. Don’t forget about the fish — someone should sprinkle those flakes too!

✅ 3. Set Your Air Conditioning

You don’t want your home turning into an oven — or running your AC like crazy while you’re away. Set your thermostat to a reasonable temperature (around 80-82°F in Arizona summers) and, if possible, monitor it remotely through a smart thermostat app.

✅ 4. Create an Emergency Contact List

Leave a list of emergency numbers for whoever is watching your home — include family, your plumber, a trusted neighbor, and your vet if you have pets.

✅ 5. Clean Out the Kitchen

Toss out any fruits, veggies, milk, or leftovers that might spoil while you’re gone. Empty the trash cans and give the kitchen a good wipe-down to avoid unpleasant surprises when you return.

✅ 6. Tidy Up Before You Leave

Coming home to a clean house is one of life’s underrated pleasures. Make the beds, vacuum the floors, and put away any clutter. You’ll thank yourself later.

✅ 7. Lock It Down

Double-check that all doors and windows are secure. Consider using timers for lights to make it look like someone’s home in the evenings.

✅ 8. Unplug Non-Essential Electronics

Save energy and reduce fire risks by unplugging things like TVs, chargers, and small appliances.

✅ 9. Water Your Plants

Either set up a self-watering system or have your house-sitter keep them alive while you’re away.

✅ 10. Plan for a Memorable Return

Before you leave, put fresh sheets on the bed, stock up on bottled water, and maybe even leave yourself a welcome-home treat in the freezer.

Final Thought:

Vacations are meant to be relaxing — and there’s nothing better than knowing your home is safe, your pets are cared for, and you won’t come home to any surprises.
